Snow Suppresses Seismic Signals From Steamboat Geyser

چکیده
Geyser and volcano monitoring suffer from temporal, geographic, instrumental biases. We present a recording bias identified through multiyear of Steamboat in Yellowstone National Park, USA. Eruptions are the tallest any geyser world they produce broadband signals at two nearby stations Park Seismograph Network. In winter, we observe lower eruption signal amplitudes these seismometers. Instead source effect, find that environmental conditions affect recorded signals. Lower for 23–45 Hz frequencies correlated with greater snow depths station 340 m away Steamboat, calculate an energy attenuation coefficient 0.21 ± 0.01 dB per cm snow. More long-term is needed geysers to track changes over time identify biases may be missed during short, sporadic studies.

Extracting Seismic Profiles from Background Seismic Signals
The idea of obtaining the seismic trace representing the impulse response at one receiver due to a source at another receiver has discussed by many authors. Jon Claerbout (see e.g. Rickett and Claerbout, 1996; Claerbout, web) introduced the concept to seismology. It has been investigated in the laboratory by Lobkis and Weaver (2001), observed in seismic data by Campillio and Paul (2003), and in...
متن کاملStudy of Seismic Signals of Artificially Released Snow Avalanches for Monitoring Purposes
Seismic signals generated by artificially released avalanches were studied f’rom the seismological viewpoint in the time and frequency domains in an attempt to characterise them for monitoring purposes. The avalanches were artificially released and the corresponding seismic signals were recorded at different sites within a radius of up to 3 km together with the video images with a common time r...

متن کاملDo frogs communicate with seismic signals?
Male white-lipped frogs exhibit conspicuous behavioral responses to calling conspecific males that are nearby but out of view. Since the calls often are accompanied by strong seismic signals (thumps), and since the male white-lipped frog exhibits the most acute sensitivity to seismic stimuli yet observed in any animal, these animals may use seismic signals as well as auditory signals for intras...
